I don't know if it's on the subject or not ... But this is how a person dies of rabies. I do not recommend watching it to impressionable people, as an autopsy is performed at the end of the video. vk.com

There is a medicine as such - the rabies vaccine, which must be used ahead of time or immediately after infection. For those who are not in the know, you can get infected even through contact with the saliva of an animal. The ketamine coma option, of course, is not available to the masses and will not work for everyone. Perhaps the girl was just lucky.

Most people do not attach much importance to rabies, in contrast to the same HIV. Therefore, the media do not often and widely cover this issue. If the media does not talk about this, it does not mean that work is not being carried out.

Mechanisms that allow the virus to spread in the host organism and hide from its immune defenses, sometimes for a very long time before taking over the organism- owner, surprise scientists and clinicians alike.

Still, there are cases of successful treatment of rabies. There are many of them, their effectiveness is constantly being studied, contested, proposed and tested new means.

Here's a story.

The possibility of a full treatment of the infection started talking only in the XXI century. This was due to the case of the American Gina Gies, who for the first time in the history of medicine did not receive a vaccine, but survived after the onset of symptoms of rabies. On September 12, 2004, 15-year-old Gina caught a bat that bit her on the finger. The parents did not go to the doctor, considering the wound to be trifling, but after 37 days the girl developed a clinical picture of infection: a rise in temperature to 39 ° C, tremor, double vision, difficulty speaking - all signs of damage to the central nervous system. Gina was admitted to a children's hospital in Wisconsin, and rabies was confirmed in the laboratory of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.

The parents were asked to try an experimental treatment on the girl. Having received consent, the doctors, using ketamine and midazolam, introduced the patient into an artificial coma, effectively turning off her brain. She also received antiviral therapy with a combination of ribavirin and amantadine. In this state, doctors kept her until the immune system began to produce enough antibodies to cope with the virus. It took six days.

A month later, the tests confirmed that the girl's body had no virus. Moreover, her brain functions were minimally impaired - she graduated from high school, and a year later she received a driver's license. Currently, Gina graduated from college and intends to continue her studies at the university. It is not surprising that she sees biology or veterinary medicine as her future profession, and plans to specialize in the field of rabies.

Options for surviving rabies with treatment of about 20%, and better - in the early stages. Yet all doctors always recommend getting vaccinated against rabies.
