Smoking and alcohol turn into addiction instantly on one cigarette and a glass. The specificity of these drugs is that addiction can be overlooked or easily survive withdrawal without switching to systematic use.
Nicotine breakdowns are rather weak: no pain, no twisting of limbs and other inconveniences. A person with no smoking experience may well not recognize tobacco withdrawal and confuse it with a bad mood, for example. And then the discomfort goes away and is forgotten. For a smoker with experience, everything is more difficult because he knows exactly what he lacks to get rid of stress.
Alcohol "breaks" more. There is a hangover here, which is nothing but an alcoholic withdrawal. Take your dose and you will feel better. Over time, with frequent use, a person no longer wants to experience a hangover and helps himself to remove it with another dose of alcohol, which turns into a vicious circle (as with cigarettes. A cigarette causes discomfort, which is removed by the next cigarette, which then also causes discomfort)
If we briefly describe this mechanism, then all people have their own level of self-sufficiency. There is such a thing as dependence on external stimuli in order to feel complete. In general, this is a property of weak-willed and not independent individuals. But since there are only a few slave cars and a small cart, and there are only a few leaders, it is not surprising that there are more than enough people who want to have a powerful external stimulus. It often happens that a person develops a dependence on something, and is deprived of the opportunity to use it, then he immediately finds the next one. From religion to drugs, from drugs to alcoholism, from alcoholism somewhere else. Because a person feels a deep inner flaw and can find peace nowhere and in anything. This is a difficult situation, and often even specialists cannot help such people, magic has been canceled since the time of Christ. Some people are at an average level of self-sufficiency, and a very small part is able to ignore any negative influence of the environment, be deprived of the fear of becoming an outcast, and have genuine independence. Usually they don't need psychologists.
So many do not smoke. and many people smoke.
You should bear in mind that the concept of addiction is rather psychological.
ie a person must systematically run to the remedy that relieves stress or a large dose of pleasure.
When he does this all the time and gives up trying to get what he needs in other ways, then he becomes addicted.
Addiction does not occur instantly. And the habituation time depends on the psychological and physical condition, and, of course, on the type of substance. In the case of non-tabulated substances like nicotine and ethanol, the person is not yet aware of the danger.

To become a smoker, trying a few times is not enough. To become a drunken alcoholic, you need to regularly drink regularly for years. Someone comes to this, but someone does not. Some are more susceptible to all kinds of dependencies, others less.
