Sex promotes the release of oxytocin, a hormone that, among other effects, has a calming effect on the nervous system. Thus, sex is a way to get a dose of natural sedatives.

I can't say about hormones, it's better to turn to people close to anatomy, but from my own observations I can say that sexual tension is relieved. It's like hunger: if you are hungry, this feeling will prevail until you calm it down. And when you eat, it becomes one less thorn in the brain, it is easier to think. So it is here.
