".. The eyes of the praying mantis are faceted - they consist of a great many of the smallest cells. The praying mantis has no pupils as such. And the black dots are pseudo-pupils, which are obtained due to the refraction, reflection and re-reflection of light in several cells"

In insects, the eyes consist of a very large number of small eyes - facets. They do not and cannot have pupils as such. Black dots are those facets that are directed at the viewer - we see the bottom of the facet, and it is black, in contrast to the light walls that we see on the facets, which look to the side. Most insects also have dark walls, so the difference is not visible. They cannot follow, they always look in all directions. It turns out that this is such an optical illusion, but this does not explain the fact that he was "following" his finger. Perhaps he slightly turned his head for one with the body, an imitation of eye tracking was obtained. Maybe someone knows more, but on the Internet, for example, there is practically no information on this matter. What can be said for sure is that neither the eyes themselves, nor what, as it were, inside them can not move in insects. Quite a strange phenomenon.
