Sorry for the fanaticism, it's just the first thing that came to mind.

I'll tell you about my situation.

I am an atheist, and my family is religious. They are not ardent fanatics, but they are still baptized, etc. My older sister, who is already a little over 30, gave birth to a daughter, and even in a leap year. In their opinion, this is very bad and the child needs protection from above. By the way, my relatives know about my views on religion. Nevertheless, my sister began to cultivate me immediately after the birth of the little one, that she needed to be baptized. Only I was a candidate for godparents, since someone, I don't remember who, told her that the godfather should be close in blood. That is why she did not consider options from her husband. On our side, besides me, there were two more uncles. Only one alcoholic, the other already retired. Like, old or drunken ones will be bad godmothers, but she needs more health for her little one (yes, I don't really like children either). In general, for a year I simply refused my sister. Then our mother joined in. My argument for branding a child was just a shake of air. They didn’t care that a small one could grow up and go to Buddhism or Islam, that they deprived her of her choice, etc. For the next six months, my mother was already thoroughly undertaking me, periodically raising this topic. My phrase that they think only of themselves, and they don’t care about my feelings, played a delay of only one month. In the end, I agreed. My only condition was that I refuse to attend lectures for the godparents. I don’t know how churches are baptized in your regions and cities, but in Buryatia it was necessary to attend at least 2 lectures and receive the corresponding coupons, without this they would not have been baptized. I sent my sister to these lectures, because she needed this divine protection, and not me, so that she would at least know something, because a person had not even read the Bible.

On the appointed day, I appeared at the required church to participate in a religious ceremony. Little one was baptized, and they poured holy water on my shirt sleeves. Nothing, survived. For if a small one grows up to be a believer, I will have a lever of pressure in the form of "I'm your godfather".

you just need to define what is more important to you. if those who asked to become godparents, why not do them a favor, besides, it is always easier to deny than to accept a more difficult situation for yourself and rise a little above yourself

if they are 'nobody' to you, then of course not worth it, in the end they also realize this and everyone will be sad and insulting (

All of the above respondents drew attention to the anti-religious views of the questioner. But he also hates children. I think this is a more serious problem. I propose to refer to a disease, possibly contagious, that could harm the child.

Godparents, by definition, must be baptized (at least) members of the Church and, accordingly, believers. You are not obliged to satisfy the desires of friends and relatives, especially in such a position that you owe / owe - you owe nothing to anyone and do not owe anything to anyone. In fact, this is a form of abusiveness, when friends and relatives come down on you and say "you will be the Godfather." By the way, are those who suggested / imposed a godchild on you, aware of your views? If so, they are strange laymen in their religion.

Yes, the priest himself will say that the godfather must be baptized himself. If the invitees are not in the subject, you need to explain what the obstacle is, nothing can be done. Look for, they say, a candidate suitable for the requirements of the situation.

Why can't you refuse? Refuse, of course. Moreover, parents need to honestly say that you will not be able to fulfill your godfather's duty, but simply for the form it is not necessary.

Answer 8

Why is it impossible? It seems that this is a voluntary matter. If such a request came to me, then I would simply explain the reason for the refusal: this contradicts my worldview and principles, since I do not support the concept of God and consider it wrong to impose any religion (in this case, baptize a child). That's all. In general, not everyone can be a godfather. You have to be a believer (sort of) and be baptized (that's for sure). Alternatively, you can tell that you are not baptized (if in fact you are) and do not understand what they are telling you at all :)
