Why don't they like it?
Everything is not so simple!

Let's figure it out:

Biologically active additives (BAA) are compositions of biologically active substances intended for direct intake with food or introduction into food products (thanks, Wikipedia).

Supplements are used:

  • as an additional source of food and biologically active substances,

  • to optimize different types of metabolism;

  • normalization and / or improvement of the functional state of organs and systems;

  • reduce the risk of disease;

-normalization of the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract, etc.

Just a panacea! Why don't they like dietary supplements?

For the sake of fairness, I note that doctors do not like them for the most part! And patients drink handfuls😊

Physicians against dietary supplements because:

  1. In Russia, there are no laws regulating the production and sale of dietary supplements, which provides a good basis for the development of the "black market"!

  2. Dietary supplements are not a medicine, therefore, they do not pass the control that all medicines are subject to!

  3. Dietary supplements are often used for # self-medication, as they are NOT A MEDICINE!
    BUT contain active substances that (if used incorrectly) can harm your health! Therefore, it is FORBIDDEN to use dietary supplements without consulting a doctor!

  4. In 2017, Consumer Reports (Source: Consumer Reports. 15 Supplement Ingredients to Always Avoid. March 21, 2017.) published a list of 15 potentially hazardous food additives (the potential for harm outweighed the potential benefit). I suggest you familiarize yourself with them:

Aconite - associated with the development of nausea, vomiting, weakness, paralysis, respiratory failure and heartbeat, and even, possibly, death.

Caffeine powder. The use of the supplement can lead to the development of seizures, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest and death. Side effects are most pronounced when combined with other stimulants.

Chaparral can cause kidney problems, liver damage and possibly death.

Mother-and-stepmother - associated with possible liver damage and may be a carcinogen.

Comfrey - increases the risk of liver damage and cancer, possibly associated with death.

Dubrovnik - associated with the development of liver damage, including the development of hepatitis.

Celandine - may cause liver damage

Green tea extract (Camellia sinensis) - dizziness, tinnitus, iron malabsorption, anemia, increased heart rate and blood pressure, liver damage, possibly death ...

Kava pepper - can cause liver damage, exacerbation of Parkinson's disease and depression, and affect driving.

Lobelia - associated with the development of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, increased heart rate, impaired consciousness, seizures, hypothermia, coma and death.

Methylsinephrine - may causeincrease heart rate, rhythm disturbance, cardiac arrest. The risk is greatly increased when used with other simulants.

Marshmint oil - renal and liver failure, damage to the nervous system, possibly death.

Red yeast rice - damage to the kidneys, liver and muscles, hair loss. May interact with statins, increasing the risk of side effects.

Usnic acid - liver damage.

Yohimbe - increased blood pressure and heart rate, headache, seizures, liver and kidney damage, panic attacks, possibly death.

Thus, doctors are not against all dietary supplements!
Doctors for their reasonable, competent use according to indications after appointment by the attending doctor!

The question was initially asked incorrectly, because a dietary supplement is a dietary supplement; accordingly, ordinary pharmacy / sports vitamins are dietary supplements and are completely harmless. On the other hand, I am sure that there are drugs that are classified as dietary supplements, but can be hazardous to health.
