In general, the problem of insomnia's causality is very new and relevant for psychiatry. If, for example, you asked this question 10-20 years ago, the answer would be: "No, since insomnia is a symptom, which means that the disorder to which it is imputed leads to madness."
Modern research shows that insomnia can occur on its own and not be associated with any mental or medical illness. This is called primary insomnia (or psychophysiological insomnia). In addition to serious depression and dysthymic disorders, insomnia can cause the manic episodes that are common in people with bipolar disorder (formerly called "manic depression").
With regard to insomnia as a symptom, it is exacerbated by panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia, which undoubtedly leads to more severe disorders up to schizophrenia.
