Bad breath or halitosis is of two types - physiological and pathological. At the first, bad breath occurs periodically after eating meat, fish and dairy products. The smell goes away if you brush your teeth or chew gum.

Pathological halitosis is manifested due to diseases of the oral cavity or internal organs. Causes of bad odor include:

• Tartar, deposits and plaque. Bacteria accumulate on the tooth enamel and under the gum, which leads to the growth of pathogenic microflora and an unpleasant odor.
• Caries. The tooth decays, giving off an unpleasant odor. After filling the crown, halitosis disappears.
• Gingivitis. Gums become inflamed and bleed. The dentist prescribes physiotherapy and medication with ointments.
• Stomatitis and glossitis. Microorganisms multiply on soft tissues, causing sores and odors.
• Pericoronitis. If a wisdom tooth does not erupt properly, a "hood" is formed from the gums, under which food particles rot. The figure 8 is either removed or the gum is cut to free the tooth.
• Alveolitis. The socket becomes inflamed after tooth extraction, and pus may appear in it, which causes an unpleasant odor. The doctor cuts the gum, removes the inflamed tissue and cleans the hole with an antiseptic.

Bad breath also occurs with poor dental hygiene with braces. Food particles that are not cleaned from the ligatures rot and smell. To prevent this from happening, you need to clean the braces with special brushes and rinse your mouth after each meal.
