What actually happens in the brain when we are stressed by external events or internal thoughts? An action or emotion alters the activity of the brain, either by strengthening or weakening circuits of neurons, and gradually turning on or off certain circuits. The communication between neurons occurs both through electrical impulses and through specific chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters facilitate the transmission of neural impulses. The stress state stimulates the human body to produce the hormone cortisol, a neurotransmitter. How does this hormone affect the human body and mind?

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have discovered that stress can be beneficial or harmful. The specific effect depends on the dose of the stress attack you receive. In general, stress is the body's protective and adaptive response to adversity. Stress hormones, in particular cortisol, secreted at such times, quickly mobilize our body and brain to cope with adversity. Excessive functional activity caused by a huge release of cortisol damages the cells of neurons and the connections between them. This process negatively affects the work of neural circuits and leads to their death. During sleep, the brain removes the products of biochemical reactions from the body, increasing the resistance to stress of human organisms.
