It wasn't really that scary. In all cultures there were people who took birth (in our country they were called midwives). In fact, they not only took delivery, but also helped prepare for them and restore the health of the woman in labor in the first days. In the case of presentation of the fetus, they were able (not always, of course) to unfold the fetus with their hands. Plus, before women had fewer female problems, and girls with narrow pelvis often did not want to marry, because they were afraid of problems in childbirth. As a result, rarely a woman with a narrow pelvis and poor health generally got married, while rare girls with difficulties in childbirth received the help of midwives.

Sorry for the clumsy answer. I hope I was able to get the message across.

As a matter of fact, no way - they died during childbirth. This happened, probably quite often. At least, according to one of the versions, it is for this reason that our brain has shrunk (in comparison with our primitive ancestors). The logic is as follows: a big brain - a big head, a big head - there are more chances that it will not work to give birth and the child will die with its mother. This is approximately how evolution works, death is its main tool. Evolution is not easy when a person, for no reason at all, has the ability to see in the infrared spectrum ... Evolution is when everyone who has not had such an ability dies. Or gradually, from generation to generation, their offspring disappear. Or immediately, for example, in the event of an epidemic. Such things ...

By the way, a cesarean section for quite a long time allowed to save only a child ...

This is another reason to rejoice at what a wonderful time we live in)
