I have never felt sympathy for either Frolo from The Hunchback, or Scar from The Lion King and other Disney negative characters. No, definitely not. I had a liking for the secondary characters. The same Abu or Jacob from Aladdin, people from Beauty and the Beast turned into objects, 7 dwarfs from Snow White, a monkey from the Lion King, these are all very interesting characters. As for the villains.

Well, they have one mission to harm, no matter who, the main thing is to harm. They also do not care how harm will be done, be it murder, seizure of power, robbery, etc. For them, this does not seem like harm, but on the contrary, liberation, enlightenment, etc. Take the same Joker. Maybe their message is sometimes correct, but the methods are too radical. Therefore, I love antiheroes, no, not Deadpool, this is generally some kind of clown, the Punisher, a great example of an antihero. He kills evil uncles, instead of bringing them to the police, as one clown in tights with cobwebs does, well, kamon, the criminal will be released, then you still have to catch him. What kind of hemorrhage? And so, everyone knows you and everyone knows what will happen if you do things. As was the case with many of the Punisher's enemies.

From the first remembered. Priest Frollo from Notre Dame Cathedral. There are, of course, such films, so it fits. The hero is not negative, but insanely controversial. With a huge misunderstanding of himself, from which all his rage came. And, in fact, he is the noblest man. And second, Thomas Barrow from Downton Abbey. This is a miracle, not a hero. I don't understand how you can hate him. The whole series and I do nothing but pity him, more than anyone else. A handsome man with a difficult past, apparently due to unconventional orientation. From this, his intrigues, gossip, his inability to build trusting relationships with those around him, good people, follow. But he really wants to become a part of something bigger. Also, Loki and the Phantom of the Opera. Christina Doe will never understand. What new has she learned from her life with Raoul? And the Phantom would reveal to her a world that no one else would ever see. According to the film, I would definitely stay in the romantic cellars of the Opera. What can attract superficially negative characters in general? A hidden secret, a hidden pain that you want to unleash, in order to justify and, of course, help.

I believe that sympathy for negative characters is initiated and promoted specifically (according to the "Overton Windows" system) - perhaps by filmmakers, or studio managers. The megapiar of the film "Suicide Squad" only confirms this. Why is a good question. Profit is yes, but there may be something else.

Negative heroes are interesting to us because usually there is an intriguing backstory behind them (what led him to this life, what influenced the formation of his character).

Crazy, cynical and charismatic they stand out from the crowd. Negative characters can go beyond the boundaries established by society (after all, everyone would like to try something forbidden, and in films the villains, so to speak, do it for us)

Without them, the film will be dull and boring. Agree, it is not interesting to watch how some correct hero, who, for example, has never used profanity, follows the laws, established norms, is always ready to help everyone.

Well, about examples, as they wrote before me, the Joker is one of the brightest and most memorable characters.

You can also take the same Voldemort, the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland, Freddy Krueger and Nosferatu (isn't he lovely).

My constant feeling. As already mentioned above, the Purple Man from Jessica Jones, the Joker of their Dark Knight and Bane from the same place, Ozymandius and the Comedian from the Keepers, Ganibal from the series of the same name, Khan from Star Trek, Magnetto from the X-Men, Jamie Lanister (this, of course, is debatable, is he an antagonist, but still), Kramer from Saw. In short, the list is endless.

I began to notice that many negative characters began to be liked more than before. Several years ago I saw a quote: "Have you noticed that the villains in films always strive to change something, while the" good "leave everything in their place?"

So I began to see in many well-written villains some way to change the tuning. The system needs a conflict. Otherwise, there will be no development.

If we talk about specific films, then:

  1. "The Dark Knight" - Joker (here probably just because of the love of the DC Universe)

  2. "Star Wars" - D. Vader (if you can consider him a bad guy).

  3. "Fox Hunter" - the trainer played by Steve Carrell (Due to the unusual, ambiguous character, because of his motives)

And others, which I don't remember now. I'll just add that I like actors who play villains in such a way that you are ready to smash your TV screen, or break something, just not to see it. Such villains are remembered for a very long time and the film itself, of course, too.

I remember watching the TV series "Jessica Jones" only because I really liked her enemy Purple Man. And the actor himself is cute, and there was some sympathy for the hero.

It happens. From immediately remembered examples - to the Joker from The Dark Knight. Why? Charisma and intelligence, double cunning. Despite assurances about the absence of a plan and morality, they can be accurately traced with him.

I recently came across an interesting video that matched my thoughts:
