As far as I know, the type of pathogen that is now considered to be the main one - Treponema pallidus , originated from another species, prevalent mainly in South and Central America (where Christopher Columbus * arrived *).

I consider this hypothesis of the spread of the disease to be the most true, since it was Columbus * who brought this type of bacteria to Europe.

It should be borne in mind that before that, syphilis existed in Europe, but its causative agent was another strain of treponema, that came there from Africa. I will also mention that some symptoms indicating syphilis were described in patients with Hippocrates, Avicenna, Dioscoris, Celsus.

So syphilis was everywhere and always, and was transmitted by everyone and to each. But it's another matter which strain is considered a modern pathogen. Now it is Treponema pallidum ( Treponema pallidum), which "sailed" from America.

Treponema pallidum (Treponema pallidum)

Perhaps I think maybe there is a myth that he brought him to Europe, but this theory is refuted, If so, then this is his 2nd systemic disease. He was a criminal and a loser. It's no secret that he didn't discover America.
