Not brushing your teeth is bad, but brushing them too often is also a bad idea. If you start brushing your teeth after every meal, the constant friction will lead to not very pleasant consequences.

Experts recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, but many people brush their teeth after every meal, snack, and sugary drink for hygiene reasons.

However, research has shown that brushing your teeth immediately after eating or drinking , especially acidic ones, can do more harm than good.

After consumption of carbonated and acidic drinks, the acid attacks the enamel of the teeth and the layer under the enamel called dentin. The rubbing of a toothbrush pushes the acid even deeper into the enamel and dentine.

Dr. Howard Gamble, president of the US Academy of General Dentistry, conducted a study in which scientists tracked participants for three weeks, examining the effects of brushing teeth after drinking Diet Coke.

Scientists found that brushing teeth 20 minutes after eating increased the level of dentin damage. The damage was much lower if the person brushed their teeth half an hour or an hour after eating.

To protect the dentin surface, wait at least half an hour before brushing your teeth.

Fruits, especially orange and lemon juice, vinegar, and sugary sodas contain high levels of acid and soften enamel. If you wait at least 30 minutes, there will be enough saliva to neutralize the acidity.
