Are there studies confirming the relationship between musical preferences and the level of education of a person, as well as between the level of his intelligence?

I would have read the results of such a study myself with pleasure, but let's think logically. We will divide the works into simple and complex in their sounding and into simple and complex in their semantic load of texts.

If we take only music, without words, then it should be admitted that the sound of orchestral music is complex in itself, or a classic, which is distinguished by many notes and tonalities. It requires hearing and understanding, attentiveness, to monitor every note and key and place them on the "grid" of perception. Listening, we seem to paint a picture, as if with the help of paints, where instead of colors there are notes and tonality. You listen and draw a complex pattern of sounds. It takes mental skill and imagination. The same cannot be said about pop music, hip-hop, drum and bass, etc.

If you take music with lyrics from Russian music, then the sound of Vysotsky's or Grebenshchikov's songs requires the ability to recognize new information and this is more difficult than "Hop hey lalalay" or "Hey, how many friends, dance more merrily, I close my eyes and everything will be OK. I sit high, I look far away, It's not so easy for me to find you."

This is just so, a couple of examples, but in general the level of intelligence is also associated with the choice of taste preferences, the choice of authors of books and poets, the choice of channels and groups (for example) VKontakte. There is a difference whether a person is subscribed to MDK or to "Around the World" or "How does it work?"

From personal observation: I once drove with a dude listening to pop popular radio. It was in the morning, the host of the morning show was joking at random with bearded jokes about blondes and selfies. Parents in the car listen to rock radio, I did not hear any open stupidity there either from the presenters or from the callers. It is necessary, of course, to take into account the CA of the stations, but I am inclined to think that there is a correlation rather than not.

Something like that has been around the Internet for a long time. It claims that high intelligence is characteristic of lovers of jazz, blues, rock, metal; low intelligence is typical for fans of pop and turnip. I have not yet found direct evidence (links to research reports, such a plan), although already now I can say that many subtleties are not taken into account. Although no, I see direct evidence, unfortunately, every day. And I will say that they are not very far from the search result on the Internet for the phrase "connection between musical preferences and intelligence".

We can say that more intelligent people often stand out for their individuality, in almost all areas of life, including tastes in music.

And such a genre as pop, and the like, aimed specifically at a large audience of people ... Therefore, you can find some kind of correlation between these variables.

(However, I have not yet seen an experiment that would fully confirm this opinion)
